Cece Leone, one of the area’s best free throw shooters, was 8 for 8 from the line, and scored 18 in Ireton’s setback at McNamara Sunday.
Bishop McNamara (12-12, 7-8) broke out to a 12-5 first quarter advantage and never gave the Cardinals much room to rally in their 68-43 win Sunday in Forestville.
Ireton bounced back in the second period to score 13 points, but went to the locker still facing a 7-point deficit. They came out strong and played a competitive third period, being outscored only 16-14, but not what they needed to get within striking distance of the home team in the game’s final quarter.
It was the Mustangs that stepped on the gas in the fourth, with a 27-11 burst to take the momentum away from the visiting redbirds.
Cece Leone led Ireton with 18 points and sophomore Michelle Montgomery added 6. Kyara Frames led all scorers with 23 for McNamara while Myka Johnson-Matthews had 17 and Kholby Oliver added 16. The Cardinals were sharp from the charity stripe, knocking down 13 of 17 free throws to 18 of 28 for the Mustangs, but quantity trumped quality as the home team piled up the opportunities from the line.
Next up for Bishop Ireton (6-20, 0-15) is a road trip to St Mary’s Ryken on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7pm. The Cardinals conclude the regular season with road games at Good Counsel on Thursday and St Johns on Saturday. First round WCAC playoff action begins on Feb 20th.
