With three Cardinals scoring in double figures, Bishop Ireton rallied from a 53-47 deficit to win 63-59 in the final game of the Joe Cascio Tournament at West Potomac High School Monday night. Cece Leone had 19, Michelle Montgomery 18, and Danielle Hatchett 11 to overcome the Wolverines’ sophomore Maddy Zdebsky’s game-high 25.
West Potomac and Bishop Ireton battled in a tight contest throughout the first half, but it was the home team that held a slim 31-29 advantage at intermission. They extended their margin to seven after three periods, leading 49-41 as the teams headed into the final stanza.
Alex Stipano started the 4th quarter rally with a bucket and foul shot that drew the Cardinals to 49-45. The teams traded baskets until senior Illeana Gutierrez scored to pull Ireton to within 53-50. Leone then scored six straight to give Ireton a 56-55 lead as the period slipped away from the Wolverines, part of an Ireton 15-2 run that sent them to a 62-55 advantage. They would not be subdued at that point, their free throw shooting and defense too much for the Wolverines.
In addition to the players in double figures, Cardinals got key offense from Alexandra Stipano (6 points), Ileana Gutierrez (3) and Keyarna Frederick (2).
West Potomac had scoring from RaSheika Gregory (10 points), Maggie McDonald (6), Bre Elphage (4), #34 (3), Rosie Sheehan (3), Tenesha Green (3), Grace Moery (3) and Jessica Dorn (2).
Bishop Ireton returns to WCAC play on Friday when they host #8 ranked Elizabeth Seton. JV begins at 5pm, varsity tips off at 7pm.
