Bishop Ireton opened its game with JEB Stuart using a smothering full court press and the pressure seemed to energize the Cardinal offense with a season-high 26 first quarter points in a lopsided 56-30 win Saturday morning.
It was the second of three tournament games for the redbirds at the Joe Cascio Tournament co-hosted by Falls Church and West Potomac High Schools. The Cards will end the tourney Monday when they visit host West Potomac for a 7pm tipoff.
Junior Cece Leone led all scorers with 13 points, including 9 in the opening stanza, while Alex Stipano also scored in double figures with 10, including a pair of three-point baskets. Ireton saw seven other players score in a game that Coach Derek Campbell used his entire bench extensively.
The Cardinals roared out to a 16-0 advantage in the game’s opening minutes and ended the opening period with a 26-8 margin. The contest for all intents and purposes seemed settled at that point and the white-jerseyed squad spent much of the game working on its pressure defense and running its offensive sets against the overmatched Rebels.
Brianna Ford scored 10 points for the Fairfax County school, who were unable to score more than 9 points in any of the four quarters. JEB Stuart HS finished strong, adding nine points in the final quarter, it wasn’t enough to turn things around.
Ford led JEB Stuart’s offense, going 3-for-6 (50%) from the field.
Scoring for the Lady Cardinals were Ileana Gutierrez (7 points), Keyarna Frederick (4), Heather Pearson (4), Isabelle Kendall (4), Michele Montgomery (4), Kelly Gallagher (2), Paige Russell (4) and Danielle Hatchett (2).
Also scoring for JEB Stuart HS were Laura Hegeman (6 points), Isabel Bruns (4), Yanna Kelley (2), Leilani Young-Smith (2) and Sophia Belletti (2).
