Godley Gym is a raucous venue when the football cheer section engages in team chants. Players "storm" the bench following Cardinal win over St Mary's Ryken recently.

Bishop Ireton defeated Trinity Episcopal of Lynchburg and Middlesex High School by 2-0 counts, but fell 3-1 in their match with host Peninsula Catholic in weekend volleyball in the Tidewater.

The Cardinals opened with the host Peninsula Catholic, the reining VISAA Division II state champions.  Ireton lost the opener 25-19, bounced back to grab the second game, 25-21, but were swept out in the final two games, 25-15, 25-11.  Angela Kammen recorded a pair of service aces for the rebirds, CeCe Leone had a team-high 5 kills, while Stephanie Cabrera and Brittany Fisher added 4 each.  Cabrera’s 11 digs led the Ireton defense in the contest.

Coach Kathy Gutmann’s team handled Trinity Episcopal in two straight in the second match of the weekend, 25-22, 25-12.  Catie Burns and Shannon Burns contributed a pair of service aces each, Cabrera had 8 kills and 6 digs for the Cardinals while Stephanie Ellam recorded  8 digs.

The Cardinals third opponent, Middlesex High School, was also the victim of a straight set win by Ireton, 25-22 in the opener, 25-13 in the second of three games.  Once again, Cabrera led the northern Virginians with 9 kills and Rayghan Larrick and Shannon Burns each recorded 4 digs in the finale.

Bishop Ireton (8-5, 4-3) returns to WCAC play on Monday against a preseason WCAC favorite, Academy of the Holy Cross. The contest in Kensington, Maryland, is set for a JV contest at 4:3o with varsity set for 6pm.
