The Bishop Ireton Cardinals and Bishop McNamara each put runners in scoring position on Wednesday, but the Cardinals capitalized on more RBI opportunities, pulling out a 3-2 win at Frank Mann Field Wednesday.
Bishop McNamara out-hit redbirds seven to six, but the Mustangs stranded nine runners on base. Ireton would not relinquish the lead, though the Mustangs tacked on a pair of runs late, but was unable to overcome a three-run fifth inning deficit. The visitors scored on an error in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly by Styles in the seventh inning, but would get no closer.
Corey Phillips had a hot bat for the Cardinals. Phillips went 2-3 and scored two runs. He singled in the third and fifth innings. The game’s last lead went to the home team, thanks to a third inning rally that saw two runs cross the plate on a two-run single by John Todd. Ben Judd got the win in relief for the Cardinals pitching four innings and allowing one run.
