After retaining the Cindy Cole Cup and Bishop’s Cup last weekend, the Bishop Ireton rowers entered the less friendly waters of the Occoquan reservoir to take on unfamiliar Northern Virginia HS teams. Rowing in the Al Urquia regatta on Saturday, they did something for the first time; both varsity 8’s made it to the finals.
The men’s varsity eight won a close race (o.4 seconds) over James Madison to win the Varsity 8+ event, the first time an Ireton varsity boat has won an event on the Occoquan. The womens’ varsity matched strokes with the nationally ranked women from Madison HS but lost out in the last 500 meters and were nipped out at the end by 0.3 seconds to Pittsburgh-based Oakland Catholic HS.
The teams’ performances were judged by their coaches as a good measure of the competition in the upcoming championship races; Washington Metropolitan Interscholastic Rowing Association, and the national Stotesbury Cup to be held in Philadelphia.
