The finishing touches are being added to the City of Alexandria’s newest park, the Witter Street fields, just blocks from Bishop Ireton. One key final addition is the installation of scoreboards donated last year by the Bishop Ireton Athletic Booster Club.
The Club’s contribution, spearheaded by Club presidents Dan Babiac and incumbent Steve Lucas, will provide competition-ready fields with the capacity to host night games throughout the year. The Club provided two Nevco multi-use boards that will serve a variety of sports. The Club provided more than $10,000 for the project, one that cements the strong relationship between the School and the City of Alexandria. They are the third and fourth such contribution, Ireton’s softball team utilizes the board installed two years ago at Luckett Field, and the baseball scoreboard at Frank Mann Field is the envy of the WCAC.
The Witter Street Fields now host a number of organizations and sports. For the Cardinals, lacrosse practices after school are the School’s main need this spring. Athletic director Bill Simmons suggested soccer will make use of the fields for practice and even some games. “We work closely with the city and we are discussing the possibility of being able to play some games at the Witter Street fields in the fall. We are working now to play one or more at night as well.”
