Junior Joe Bagnerise went 2-2 with a home run and a spectacular inning-ending, run-saving catch at shortstop to send the Bishop Ireton Cardinals to a 3-1 victory, and regular season sweep, over the Gonzaga Eagles on Saturday at Frank Mann Field.
Bagnerise homered in the fourth inning and singled in the sixth inning. He also made a diving grab on a sure base hit up the middle saving a Gonzaga run and ending the Eagles’ 5th inning rally, stranding a pair of Eagles.
It was exactly what senior Nick Tangora needed as he scattered 4 Gonzaga hits to gain a complete game win in his final pitching start for Ireton in the WCAC regular season. Tangora painted the plate with a lively fast ball and showed the visiting Eagles enough off speed pitches to induce a number of fly balls but yielded only a run in the 2nd. Gonzaga, following the identical script from the earlier meeting at Hamilton Field, took the early 1-0 lead in the second when they scored their only run on the day on an RBI single by Dorris.
Bagnerise tied the game with his sole homer and Ireton tacked on two more runs with a pair of doubles in the home half of the 4th with two outs. Following the home run, Cody Hagenston walked, Todd Cunningham then doubled to left, scoring Hagenston. Corey Phillips followed with another double, plating Cunningham before starter Will Bollinger got out of the inning with a strike out.
