Both the Bishop Ireton Cardinals and Good Counsel Falcons put plenty of runners aboard on Saturday, but it was the Cardinals that were able to take advantage, pulling out a 3-1 win.
Good Counsel’s Falcons had 10 hits compared with the Alexandrians’ eight, but Good Counsel stranded nine runners on base. The Cardinals staved off the Falcons as Good Counsel Falcons was unable to match the Ireton down the stretch. Good Counsel scored one run in the sixth on an RBI single byAntonio Pino. Despite its efforts, the Falcons couldn’t get over the hump.
It was a good day at the plate for the Bishop Ireton’s Corey Phillips. Phillips went 3-4, drove in one and scored one run. He singled in the third and fifth innings and doubled in the sixth inning.
John Todd got the win for the Cardinals’ Varsity. He allowed one run over seven innings. He struck out three, walked none and surrendered 10 hits.
Bishop Ireton didn’t relinquish the lead after scoring two runs in the fifth inning when they scored on a two-run error. Good Counsel Falcons managed to score one run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Pino.
The Cardinals improved to 10-7 on the season, 6-5 in league play.
