Senior Nick Tangora, a two-time Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League all-star perfomer, was honored Tuesday by the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club on the eve of Tangora’s second consecutive appearance in the League’s all star gala Wednesday, February 20th at the Ice House Arena in Ashburn, Virginia.
The Club recognized Tangora as their athlete of the month for February. The lanky senior center iceman was the captain of the 2012-13 squad and led Ireton in goals scored and assists in his final campaign as a Cardinal. The club noted that the Fairfax Station native was not only a two-time all star player, but also a 4-time academic all star in the NVSHL.
Athletic director Bill Simmons, standing in for head coach Anthony DiCarlo, praised Tangora as ” a gentleman, a model of the scholar-athlete the Cardinals aspire to develop at Bishop Ireton.” Club president Jeff Murphy presented the award to Tangora, who thanked the Club, his family, coaches, and teammates. “I have played with great teammates, who made it possible for me to be recognized tonight,” said Tangora. “And, of course, my parents, who took me all over to practice and play hockey for all these years. I really appreciate their support.”
While Tangora was non commital about his hockey future in college, he now turns his attention to Coach Mike Gallagher’s baseball team, where the Cardinals will count on the versatile senior for another strong arm on the mound and big bat in the lineup as Ireton prepares for the 2013 baseball season.
