Last week in Alexandria the Cardinals defended their multi-year consecutive undefeated streak against the Titans and Saints in the Alexandria City Swim and Dive championships. With individual squad wins and combined team scores of Cardinals 207 Titans 143 and Cardinals 231 Saints 110, Bishop Ireton kept Coach John Gullickson’s city title streak intact. Seniors Kelly Palmer in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Kevin Grant in the 100 free, and 100 breaststroke were double winners for the Cardinals. Recent Alexandria Athlete of the Month Emi Quinn was also crowned 200 IM Champion.
Riding the wave of success to an even larger stage, the Cardinals journeyed with over 30 qualified swimmers and divers to Loyola University this past weekend to compete the time honored Catholic National Meet. Always hungry for competition, the Cardinals made the most of their invitation to this prestigious meet. The men finished 11th over local foes such as St. John’s, Pope John the Paul the Great, St. Mary’s Ryken as well as Paul VI. The Women placed 7th adding the list of fallen rivals,Bishop O’Connell, Academy of the Holy Cross, both Seton and Elizabeth Seton and Oakcrest.
The Ireton divers finished strong with Emma Petersen 5th and Stephanie Frazier 6th. Individual swimming performance highlights include Ben Gorski’s 8th in the 200 Yard Free, Captains Emi Quinn 8th in the 100 Yard Fly and Kelly Palmer 7th in the 200 Yard Free. All 6 of the men’s & women’s relays advanced to to finals and the women especially celebrated top 5 status in their 200 and 400 yard Free Style distances.
The Cardinals will host VSIS rival the Wolves of Pope John Paul the Great as their recognize their Seniors this Thursdays January 31st at Marymount 5:30pm.
