Bishop Ireton was simply no match for the senior-laden Knights of St Mary’s Ryken Friday in a 64-25 rout of the Cardinals in Godley Gym. The Cardinals held their only lead at 2-0 before the visitors reeled off 11 straight points and the tone for the night was set.
After one period the Leonardtown, Maryland school held a 17-5 advantage and the Knights opened the second period with another big run, this time a 10-0 spurt to gain a 20-point lead. The Cardinals rallied with their own 6-2 counterattack, but entered halftime on the short end of a 29-11 count.
The third period was more of the same as the outmanned home team saw another Ryken streak, this time a 21-2 burst blow the margin to 50-13, and the period would end with the navy blue-clad Ryken owning a 55-16 lead. The fourth quarter saw both teams substituting liberally and the play evened out with both clubs scoring nine each in a game long before decided. Mara Celis-Copelotti led the Cardinals with 5, Julia O’Brien and Camille Weber had 4 each on a long night for the offense of the home team.
For the Cardinals, they fall to 8-7 on the season, 0-6 in conference play. Elizabeth Seton visits Godley Gym Tuesday in a tripleheader, freshmen at 4, JV at 5:45, and varsity tipoff slated for 7:30.
