St Pius X Christmas Tournament ends for Ireton with win, 56-49

Bishop Ireton improved to 9-3 on the year with a hard fought 56-49 boys basketball win over host St Pius X Saturday in the final game of the 3-day tourney in Atlanta.

The game had an uneven start, with the Cardinals building a 9-2 lead early, the Golden Lions clawing back to 9-6 at the end of one period.   Ireton picked up the pace in the second, putting 16 points on the board to take a 25-16 advantage at the intermission.

St Pius X scored the first 5 points of the second half to close the deficit to four at 25-21 and the quarter seesawed back and forth before the Cardinals would close out the period leading 38-31.  With 5:46 left in the game, Ireton grabbed its largest lead at 43-34, but again the Golden Lions rebounded with a 7-2 run to close the lead to 45-41.

The Cardinals responded with six unanswered points to build the lead to 10 at 51-41 with only 1:29 to play.  The teams swapped baskets, but the Cardinals coasted to the 7 point final.

Coach Neil Berkman’s team had an impressive run. The three opponents facing the ball club came into their games with Ireton sporting a combined win/loss record of 36-5, including Brother Martin’s 16-1 mark. For the Alexandria school to go 2-1 for the road trip portends good things could be ahead for these Cardinals and their fans.

Good Counsel visits Godley Gym on the final day of the Christmas break for the road-weary boys. A 2:30 freshmen game tips off a tripleheader of hoops, the varsity contest is slated for a 6pm start.  The Cardinals faced the Falcons 4 times last season, winning the first three before being upended in their final meeting, a WCAC playoff quarterfinal berth at stake that evening.
