Sophomore Alexandra Stipano led Bishop Ireton scoring with 8 in their loss to Archbishop Carroll in Godley Gym Sunday.

The Cardinals had no answer for Archbishop Carroll’s Olivia Turner Sunday, and the Lion’s senior poured in a game-high 23 points as the visitors cruised to their third win of the season in Alexandria.  For Bishop Ireton, the game appeared to be a struggle, as shots didn’t fall and rebounds seemed to find only green jerseys.

The Lions, led by Turner, started fast and jumped to an 18-9 first quarter advantage. Isabelle Kendal gave Ireton its only lead at 1-0, but Carroll’s Courtney Crawford responded with a three  and the Lions were off to the races. While the visitors hit jump shots and layups, nothing fell for Cardinals and they scored only with free throws in the game’s opening minutes. That too proved a difficult task on the afternoon as Ireton would end the game only 14 for 30 from the charity stripe and tally but 14 field goals for the game.

Carroll continued to score in the second period, and the Cardinals likewise picked up the pace offensively but the teams broke for intermission with Carroll owning a 16-point bulge at 38-22.  Both teams struggled out of the locker room in the third quarter, scoring a combined 11 points to send the contest to the final stanza with Ireton trailing 43-28.

The Cardinals shaved four more points off the lead in the fourth quarter but the contest was long decided as the home team fell to 6-5 on the season and 0-4 in the WCAC.  Alex Stipano led the Cardinals in scoring with 8, Danielle Hatchett, Cece Leone, and Camille Weber all added 7 for the Cardinals. In addition to Turner’s 23, Crawford chipped in 12 for the visitors, who improved to 5-2 on the campaign, a respectable 3-1 in the WCAC.

Bishop Ireton will travel to Falls Church for the Joe Cascio Classic on Dec 27 and 28.  Ireton will open with the host team, Falls Church at noon on the the 27th, if they overcome the Jaguars, they will meet the winner of West Potomac vs JEB Stuart at noon Friday. A loss on Thursday will send them to the consolation final at 10am on Friday.  The team then returns to WCAC on Wednesday, January 2d as they play a tripleheader at Good Counsel. Freshmen tip off at 2:30, JV at 4:15, varsity at 6pm.
