Coach Don Dight is coming off a pair of seasons with more than 20 dual wins, a couple of tournament championships, and two first-team, all-Met wrestlers on his resume’. With another challenging season ahead and crew of anxious, but young wrestlers returning, the Cardinals will be an exciting team to watch develop.
The grapplers will start December 1st when they head to St James School for a season-opening tournament, then begin the dual meet season, Wednesday, Dec 4th, in McLean with the Panthers of Potomac School. December 15th brings the annual Bishop Ireton Holiday Classic wrestling tournament in Godley Gym. The Cardinals will have onlytwo other home events, a pair of WCAC triangulars, where they host St Johns and Good Counsel on January 21st in Godley Gymnasium and the Knights, both O’Connell and St Mary’s Ryken, visit on January 30th.
The Cardinals will head to the Northern Region tournament again this year at Fairfax High School. The two-day affair, Dec 7th and 8th, is a 32-team mega tournament. Last year, the redbirds 9th place finish was the highest by a private school and yielded a champion at 215 in all-Met Andrew Lutterloh, now off to wrestle for King College in Tennessee. Ireton will return to the St Stephen’s Christmas tournament on Dec 28th, the King George Tournament downstate in January, as well as the Catholic Commonwealth Tournament at Benedictine on Jan 19th.
The annual WCAC championship tournament will be hosted by St John’s on Feb 2. The march begins then with St Albans tourney the following weekend, then the VISAA state championships, and National Preps closes the campaign.
