Top-ranked freshman Stephanie Lin, playing number 4 singles, advanced to Monday’s championship match in the WCAC tennis tournament. Bishop Ireton’s other semifinals were defeated in play on Saturday at the Olney Manor Park Tennis facility.
Lin, the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club athlete of the month for October, defeated third-seeded Jenne Barube of Bishop O’Connell 8-2 on another blustery day of outdoor tennis in Maryland. Lin will face second-seeded Michelle Bucher of St John’s in the championship match at 1pm Monday.
Paul VI’s Anna Markel topped the Cardinals’ Natalia Spinetto 8-3 in number 2 singles to advance to the championship while sister, Cristina Spinetto, was upended in the #5 singles semi’s by Bishop O’Connell’s Mariel Cardenas in a thriller, 9-7. Ireton’s 4th semifinalist, second-seeded junior Avery Morrison was edged 8-6 by the third-seeded Sarah Thomas of PVI.
The WCAC tournament is the team’s final event of the season, seeded 10th in the state, only the top 8 move into the playoffs.
