The Bishop Ireton men’s and women’s rowing teams completed their 2012 seasons this past weekend with a strong showing at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, PA.  The women’s varsity led the charge – placing 17th in the opening round time-trial and 16th in the semi-finals.  Racing in one of the deepest fields at recent Stotesbury Cups, the varsity men rowed a season-fastest time of 4 minutes 28 seconds to a 26th place finish.  All other Bishop Ireton boats improved on last year’s finishes – including the freshmen teams – boding well for the future of the program.

Overall, the Bishop Ireton Rowing teams season was a success. During the regular season, the team retained all of their competitive cups – the Bishop’s Cup, The Cindy Cole Cup, and the Anacostia Invite Championship. At the WMIRA League Championship, the Cardinals placed both varsity boats in the grand final for the first time in team history. In which the men placed 4th overall and the women raced to a bronze earning 3rd place finish.

When asked about his programs strong finish to the 2012 season, Head Coach Eric Gehrke was excited for the future, “I think it is a huge testament to the work ethic of our athletes that we continued to improve and get stronger as the season wore on. All of their off-season training really paid off and was what directly led to our success at WMIRAs. I also think this is the deepest Ireton team I have coached and look forward to the effect all of our young athletes will have on this program over the next few years.”
