Pitcher Jake Gutman will be an important part of Ireton's run for a state championship beginning Tuesday.
The Cardinals have a busy week ahead as teams prepare for the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association’s Division I playoffs. Those playoffs see the redbirds all over the state, from the lacrosse team hosting their opening round contest to the baseball team lumbering down to Lynchburg to face Liberty Christian Academy. Weather also threatens to complicate life for Bishop Ireton’s Cardinals.
The baseball team is slated to challenge LCA on Tuesday, though weather may push the game to Wednesday. The host Bulldogs may host the Cardinals at Liberty University on Tuesday or on the home diamond at LCA on Wednesday. Officials hope for a decision by Monday evening. Winner will likely play #2 seeded PVI, winners of the 2012 WCAC title on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the softball team travels only a mile and a half for a rematch with the #4 seeded St Stephens/St Agnes on Tuesday at 4:30pm. The Cardinals, seeded 5th, outlasted the Saints 7-6 earlier in the season in 10 inning marathon on St Stephens Road. Winner of this match up will likely face WCAC champion, Bishop O’Connell on Friday in Petersburg.
The girls lacrosse team, a # 3 seed will host St Ann Belfield of Charlottsville on Tuesday, 5:30pm start. The Cardinals upended STAB in mid April by a 15-12 count on Fannon Field. Coach Rick Sofield’s charges hope to repeat the success and move on to likely face the number 2 seeded Collegiate School at ODU in Norfolk on Friday afternoon at 1:30.
