The Cardinals said farewell to their class of 2012 with a 3-0 win over Holy Cross Friday.

The seniors shone on senior day Thursday as the Cardinals downed Holy Cross 3-0 at Luckett Field.  Shut out pitching by senior Micki Crouch and multiple extra base hits by senior Debbie Ward allowed the Ireton softballers to finish the regular season with an 11-11 record.

The game was scoreless through 4 and a half  innings as Micki Crouch scattered 5 hits and was backed up by strong defense by senior Katie Kiesner and sophomores Heather Pearson and Maria Manzek.  For the day she tossed 107 pitches in 91 degree heat, working out of multiple innings with runners in scoring position.

With little success at the plate in the early innings, Coach Pearson shifted to small ball in the 5th.   Megan Sullivan led off with a single, junior Emily Quinn laid down a bunt which was misplayed allowing Sullivan to score and Quinn to speed all the way to 3rd base.  Kathleen Walsh bunted as well, sacrificing in another run to give Ireton a 2-0 lead.

In the 6th inning Senior Debbie Ward, in her last at bat at Luckett field, stroked a line drive home run to get the final 3-0 score.

“It was a great day for all our seniors, and a great way to end the regular season,” commented coach Terri Pearson. “Hopefully, we can ride this momentum through the WCAC and state tournaments.” With a three-way tie for second place in the WCAC, coaches meet Monday evening to sort out the tiebreaker possibilities and seed the tournament beginning on Tuesday.

The 5th seeded Cardinals will wear their away jerseys in any scenario, they could end up at Good Counsel, Paul VI, or Elizabeth Seton to open tournament play on May 8th.
