On a day when the Cardinals bid farewell to a dozen seniors, co-captain Brandon Attilliis scored three goals to lead Bishop Ireton to an 8-4 Senior Day win over Bishop McNamara in WCAC action Friday.
A beautiful sun-drenched afternoon with temperatures in the mid 60’s was a perfect backdrop for a physical effort by the home team intent on sending their seniors home with a win. Junior William Chastain added a pair of goals, Alex Carpenter, Joe Darville, and Phillip Thomas added one each.
The defense was strong, causing 15 Mustang turnovers on the afternoon, led by senior Max Becker, credited with 4. Albert Schibani cleaned up a team-high 3 ground balls of 8 the Cardinals snared on the day.
The redbirds opened a 3-0 first quarter lead and pushed the advantage to 5-1 by the intermission. The Mustangs tightened their play in the second half, holding Ireton to a single goal in the third quarter, then the visitors exploded for 3 goals, two from Dominic Pagliaro, in the final quarter to narrow the gap. Ireton gave the Mustangs a number of opportunities to narrow the game, taking a season high 10 penalties, but McNamara could score on only one of the man-advantage opportunities.
Ireton outshot the visitors 18 – 12, Ryan Baier making 8 saves for the Cardinals while Romyel Santos had 10 saves for Bishop McNamara.
The Cardinals travel to the tidewater area to take on Cape Henry Collegiate to wrap up this busy week of lacrosse, then host DeMatha on Tuesday. WCAC tournament action begins Monday May 7th, with quarterfinals the 8th, semi’s on the 10th and the 2012 WCAC championship games on Monday, May 14th at the University of Maryland’s Ludwig Field.
