Cardinals varsity 8 boat edges DeMatha in first race of the season

Under gray threatening skies, Bishop Ireton, DeMatha, and Elizabeth Seton High Schools rowed their season’s first races on the Anacostia River on Saturday, the 24th of March.  The rowers’ from each school demonstrated an intensity that was evident beginning the first race of the day.

Down ¾ of a length entering the last 500m of the race, the Bishop Ireton men’s varsity 8 slowly crept back into contention and squeezed out a one-second victory over DeMatha at the finish line. “I am glad for the varsity men as they avenged last year with an emotional victory over DeMatha.” said head coach Eric Gehrke.

The men’s Novice 4 and the women’s Varsity 8, JV 8, and Novice 8 all had opening season successes well. “I am happy with our athletes’  competitiveness and intensity – it should continue to serve us well as their rowing and awareness catches up throughout the season.” said Coach Gehrke.

Bishop Ireton will be competing in their first major regatta, the Cindy Cole Cup, on the Anacostia Saturday, March 31st.
