Senior Margaret Nealon is off to a fast start for the Cardinals in her final season at Bishop Ireton

Cardinals started out this past week on Monday with a loss against the Saints of St Stephens/St Agnes School.  Always a tough match up,  US Lacrosse’s number 2 ranked team held BI to 3 goals while wracking up 14 of their own.   Kelly Mathews, Catie Isham, and Kendall Cunningham (with an assist from Catie Isham) scored the three BI goals.

Wednesday was a better day for the Cardinals when they faced off against Episcopal to carry the game to a 14 to 5 win.   Kelly Mathews was the first on the board and wracked up two more goals by game end.  In addition, Kelly was credited with two assists.  The high scorer was Maddie Zeigler with four goals and two assists. Margaret Nealon scored twice with one assist and Christine Macey, Kendall Cunningham, Aubrey Gartlan, Charlotte Sofield and Eva Irwin followed up with a goal each.   Finally, assists where credited to Charlotte Sofield (2), Margaret Nealon (1) and Natalie Irwin (1).

On Friday night the Paul VI Panthers appeared overwhelmed against the Cardinals as the redbirds closed them down with a 17 to 0 shut out.  BI dominated on the draw as they moved on to score their first goal within the first three minutes of play. Maddie Zeigler, Margaret Nealon and Kendall Cunningham had a great evening, each scoring three times.  Charlotte Sofield scored twice with Eva Irwin, Kelly Mathews, Ellie Marrin, Catie Isham, Brenna Heaney and Christine Massey each credited with one goal.  In support of the scoring machine, Maddie Zeigler, Charlotte Sofield, Brenna Heaney, Meghan Fyffe and Margaret Nealon were credited with an assist each. The shutout was the first of sophomore Olivia Cole’s young Ireton career as well and pushed the Cardinals to 3-3 on the season, 1-0 in the WCAC.

The Cardinals will return to the “friendly confines” of Fannon Field Tuesday when they host arch-rival Bishop O’Connell in a varsity/junior varsity double header.  Action kicks off at 4pm with the JV to follow.
