It is an anticipated match up between good lacrosse programs each spring and the 2012 edition went to the Cubs of Georgetown Visitation(1-0) by a 10-6 count in the season opener for both squads.
The visitors jumped to a 2-0 lead before Ireton (0-1) rallied behind senior Maddy Zeigler to take a 3-2 lead. The Cubs countered and nursed a slim 4-3 advantage to intermission, largely on the strength of strong goaltending by sophomore Olivia Cole for the Cardinals and Gribben for Visitation.
Both teams battled into the second half with the DC school still clinging to a 6-5 lead when the Cardinals Eva Irwin was hit with a second yellow card in the contest. The resulting man down situation proved to be a tough obstacle for Ireton and the Cubs rallied to a 4-1 advantage down the home stretch to secure the victory.
A pair of sophomores, Kelly Matthews and Kendal Cunningham, tallied for Ireton, who will hit the road for a two-day trip to Richmond and Virginia Beach in search of the first win of the season when they play 2011 state runner up, Collegiate School on Friday before tackling DII Cape Henry Collegiate at noon on Saturday. Ireton will return to action on Monday when the Cambridge crew heads to US Lacrosse’s #2 ranked Saints of St Stephens for a 4pm match up with JV to follow.
