The Potomac Panthers reeled off 7 straight goals to break open a 1-1 game on Fannon Field enroute to a 12-4 win on Tuesday.  For the Cardinals, there was progress in the second half where the Cardinals narrowed the difference to one goal after the slow start.   “I saw some good things, some encouraging things in the second half of the game.” said head coach, Jon Reed in his second season with Bishop Ireton.  “We played defense more aggressively, we moved the ball better and we stayed after them, we didn’t let our shoulders sag when it would have been easy to do so in the second half.”

The JV Cardinals earned an opening game win over the determined Potomac School Panthers in the nightcap.  Attackman Stephen Gerke opened
the scoring with an assist from Jimmy Grant.  Middie Kevin Abbed added a solo goal and the Cardinals led 2-0.

The Cardinals worked hard for every ground ball and the effort paid dividends.  Grant scored at 7:08 with an assist from Gerke to extend the lead.  With 56
seconds remaining, Defenseman Andrew O’Hern scooped a ground ball high in the crease, became a one man clear and scored during a coast to coast sprint.  The Cardinals led 4-0 at the half.  Goalie Owen McHugh made several point blank saves with the sun in his face to secure the 1st half shut out.

The Panthers got on the scoreboard early in the 3rd quarter with a fast break goal.  The Cardinals responded when Crease Attackman Nick Rinaldi scored with an assist from Middie Jack Murphy to maintain a 4 point lead.  Potomac cut the lead to 5-2.  Gerke added another goal, assisted by Billy Marrin.  Potomac added a goal late to draw within 6-3 after 3 quarters of play.

Andrew Grabowski answered a solo goal early in the final quarter.   Abbed scored again during a BI Extra Man opportunity for an 8-3 lead.   A Panther score closed the gap.  Attackman Justin  Fees added a goal with an assist from Nick Rinaldi.  Potomac scored.   BI responded with a hat trick goal by Gerke,
assisted by Rinaldi for a 10-5 lead.  Potomac closed out the scoring with 45 seconds left.  The Cardinal defense ensured the 10-6 win.

The Varsity Cardinals return to action on Thursday when the Maret Frogs visit Fannon Field.
