Catherine Kennedy prepares to anchor a Cardinal relay while a "familiar supporter" looks on

The BISD team, is in the championship part of the season and the Bishop Ireton swimmers made a big impression this past weekend (Jan 28th and 29th) at the 2012 National Catholic High School Swimming Championships in Philadelphia.  The preliminary sessions were held on Saturday at Villanova University and the finals were held on Sunday at LaSalle University.  Many BI fans came out to support the team, as did our beloved BI Cardinal mascot!

The two top individual finishers for Bishop Ireton were senior Maddie Zeigler and Junior Kelly Palmer.  Zeigler finished fourth in the women’s 100 backstroke and Palmer finished 6th in the women’s 500 freestyle.  Zeigler also swan in the 100 freestyle finals where she placed 9th.  Palmer’s second individual event was the 200 freestyle, where she finished 11th.

Several other Cardinal swimmers earned individual points for the team with their fabulous  swims.  These include: Emi Quinn (12th in 200 IM and 10th in 100 Free), Kevin Grant (12th in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 free), Hayley Snell (12thin the 50 free), and Michael Ryan Clark (16thin the 50 free).

The Ireton relays were also excellent with  the boys relay team of Kevin Grant, Andrew Crandall, Ben Gorski and Michael Ryan Clark taking 5th place in both the men’s 200 and 400 freestyle relays.  The girls relay team of Maddie Zeigler, Kelly Palmer, Hayley Snell and Emi Quinn took 7th place in both the 200 and 400 free relays.   The men’s 200 medley team of Jimmy Grant, Jimmy Fonda, Cory Conway and Kevin Abbed also swam in the finals and earned  15th place.  Margaret Gray, Alex Branham, Eileen Louison and Catherine Kennedy formed the  BI women’s 200 medley relay team which swum in the finals and took 14th place.

Twenty seven swimmers made the BI National Team.  Those not mentioned above, but who still made very significant contributions to the team were:  Tommy Corridon, Jimmy Grant, Rob Mejia, Vince Mule’, Kaitlin Nguyen, Tommy Reichelt, Kaileen Rouin, Giovanni Salvatori, Juliana Sampaio, Maddie Sanasack and Carl Smearman.
Swimming Notes:

– Junior Kelly Palmer, was recently named an Alexandria Sportsman’s Club Athlete of the Month for December.  She accepted her award at the January Sportsman’s Club meeting.  Kelly is primarily a mid and long distance freestyler and is a three time City of Alexandria Champion in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

– The team is now preparing for three more championship meets:  the  WMPSSDL League  Champs, Metros, and States (VSIS) in the next three weeks.  Unlike National Catholics, each of these upcoming meets will also include diving.
