The Bishop Ireton Indoor track team competed in it’s 6th meet of the season this past Sunday. This year the team, made up of fourteen veterans and newcomers, has competed in a variety of meets that range from the highly competitive Montgomery Invitational, to the more relaxed Prince Georges county all -comers meet. Both meets were held at the prestigious Prince Georges County Sports and Learning Complex. This six lane 200 meter indoor track has been home to the Nike Indoor nationals among other top level meets.
Sunday a number of Cardinal sprinters and middle distance runners competed at the facility, and posted very good times for this time of the year. The boys team of Brandon Williams-Price, Albert Schibani, Tevon Smith, Justin Paige, and Moses Webb, competed in the 55 meters, and 4 x 200 meter relay. Because of the relaxed nature of this meet, Coach Mark Holmes put together a team of other area track athletes so that Tevon Smith could engage in a friendly challenge against his teammates. The two teams battled to the finish with the BI maroon team winning by a lean. The winning team consisted of Schibani, Paige, Webb, and Price.
This group of football and lax players has become quite formidable, and will compete together at this weekends “Last Track to Philly” meet at Georgetown Prep. The meet was given its name because it offers a number of the areas top relay teams a chance to qualify for the prestigious Penn Relays, in events that require qualifying times. Freshman John Holbrook also competed in the 55 meters, and shows great promise in preparation for this year’s spring season
Our women’s team was made up of Camille Merai, a senior who is competing for the first time, and Isela Vasquez, a freshman who embodies the true Cardinal spirit at practice and at meets. Camille was a member of our 4 x 200 relay that was led off by a member of Mclean High schools track team, a member of The Duke Ellington schools track team, and anchored by BI’s Nicole Bond, last years 100 meter bronze medalist at the WCAC Championships. Nicole also turned in yesterdays 2nd fastest time in the 55 meter dash.
The team has also been raising money at the mens varsity basketball games. The money has helped to defray expenses and allowed all of the runners to receive new Bishop Ireton Indoor Track team t-shirts. The club appreciates your support of our team.
