Cardinal Matmen snare 8th at Northern Region, Lutterloh claims title

Senior Andrew Lutterloh led Bishop Ireton to an 8th place finish with his championship win at 220 lbs. He had had two pins enroute to the title.

Senior Andrew Lutterloh edged Annandale’s Ali Musa 3-2 to lead Bishop Ireton to an 8th place finish at the 2011 Northern Region wrestling tournament, once again leading all private schools in the 32-team mega-tourney at Fairfax High School Friday and Saturday. Fauquier High School dominated the field to win the event with 226 points, Annandale was a distance second with 117.5.

Junior Nick Womack claimed a 4th place finish while Darcy Gomez earned a 5th place with a triple overtime pin, and Mike Rodriguez and Andrew Bladen garnered 6th place finishes for the Cardinals.

Lutterloh wrestled a masterful match in the championship.  The two dueled through a scoreless first two periods, Musa scored a reversal 2 points in the final two-minute session to grab a 2-0 lead. Undeterred, the 4th year varsity wrestler for Ireton, escaped for a point, then  stalked his opponent, watching the clock, waiting for an opportunity. When the moment came, Lutterloh went to one of his signature takedowns, a lateral toss, and scored a takedown with only 9 seconds remaining in the match.  Those 9 seconds were among the longest in his athletic life, however, as Musa frantically tossed, turned, and bucked to escape the 220 pounder to gain the critical escape point to send the championship to overtime. The clock finally reached :00 with Lutterloh clinging to both ankles as the Annandale Atom fought to escape.   It marks the second year in a row the Cardinals have produced a Northern Region champion, 103 pound Elliot Mondragon claimed a Northern Region title in 2010.

The Cardinals, who edged PVI in the team standing by a mere two and a half points, head to Bishop McNamara on Monday for a WCAC triangular with the Mustangs and PVI’s Panthers. Wrestling begins at 5pm in Forestville. Saturday the Cardinals look to defend their Bishop Ireton Holiday Invitational title when nine squads invade Father George Godley Gym for a full day of wrestling. Preliminary rounds begin at 9am, expect the championships to begin approximately 5:30pm.  Admission to this event is $5/person for a full day of wrestling.
