Seniors Helena Barber, above, and Katrina Guillou were named first team, all WCAC. It was the third award for Guillou.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) has announced its first, second, and honorable mention selections Monday on the eve of the league’s championship playoffs.  Five Cardinals were selected to the first or second team girls squad while one boy was honored on both first and second team rosters. Four others were honorably mentioned by the WCAC.

Senior defender, tri-captain Nick Galdos was a first team all-WCAC selection on the boys’ side while tri-captain senior Eyobell Behre was selected to the Conference’s second team.  Sophomore Spencer Amarantides and senior goal keeper and team tri-captain Chris LaBarbera were named to the honorable mention list for the Cardinals.  DeMatha’s Michael Parker was named the WCAC player of the year while St Johns’ Philip Gyau was the Coach of the Year on the boys side. See the complete listing of first team players below.

The girls landed two seniors, Katrina Guillou and Helena Barber on the prestigious first team. It was the third award for Guillou.  Anna Wissler, Emily Gupton, and Hannah Thomas earned second team, all conference honors.  Brenna Heaney, Cyana Puglise, and Karina Azar were tapped for honorable mention.

The girls first team was highlighted by player of the year Midge Purce of the top ranked Good Counsel Falcons, and her head coach, Jim Bruno was honored as the coach of the year.

Playoffs begin Monday in the WCAC with playin games. Bishop Ireton’s boys travel to Ryken, the winner gets top ranked DeMatha, while Carroll heads to McNamara, the winner travels to the Eagles of Gonzaga, both on Tuesday when quarterfinals begin conference wide. Semifinals are slated for Thursday and the championship is an 8pm start Sunday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Maryland. Admission for the event is $10, which covers both boys and girls championships.

For the girls, the 4th seeded Cardinals will host the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken at 4pm on Fannon Field in the quarterfinals. Winner advances to the semifinals, to face the quarterfinal winner of the Good Counsel game versus winner of the Monday PVI/McNamara play-in on Thursday. The girls championship game will kick off at 6pm on Sunday evening also at the Maryland SoccerPlex in the opening match of the WCAC championship doubleheader.
