Bishop Ireton’s volleyball team had a final non conference tune up as the squad heads into the final week of the WCAC regular season, dumping the Frogs of Maret 25-18, 25-17, 25-14 in Alexandria.
The Cardinals got strong play from the front line with 26 attack kills in match. Emileigh Rettig led the team with 9, Laura Hart had 6, and Ashia Cook chipped in 5. Cook had one of her best days from the service line as well, with a team-leading 7 service aces while Ashley Cabrera added 6.
The defense was steady as well in the Maret contest with Kristen Becht recording 6 digs, Rettig added 5, while Elizabeth Schafermeier and Cook each contributed 4.
The win improved Bishop Ireton to 13-12 on the season, 6-7 in the WCAC. Next up for the redbirds is a tripleheader at Paul VI Monday. Freshmen kick off the afternoon at 4pm with a best of 3 series, as will the junior varsity about 5pm. The varsity contest will follow these two.
PVI topped the Cardinals 3-2 at Godley Gym earlier in the season in one of the more exciting matches of the year. After winning the first two sets, PVI had to battle back in the deciding 5th game as Ireton stormed to back-to-back wins in sets three and four.
