Soccer is one of those games where the score often doesn’t tell the whole story. On senior day at Bishop Ireton, the Cardinals gave up a quick score and then controlled the play of the game almost the entire remainder of the game in a 1-1 draw with powerhouse St Johns Tuesday.
Senior Morgan Testa tallied for the Cadets with an assist from all conference classmate Maisie McCune in the 11th minute of the first half and nothing the Cardinals could do resulted in positive news on the scoreboard, though they would hold as substantial advantage in shots on goal for the game.
Good things happened for the redbirds off a set play from an Ireton corner kick with 13:13 remaining in the contest. Senior Katrina Guillou lifted a arching kick into the scrum, a header was settled by Helena Barber and senior defender knocked the ball in the net to knot the score.
The Cardinals repeatedly pressed St Johns in the final ten minutes as Guillou, Puglise, and the Ireton attack put nearly half dozen quality shots on net. St Johns countered with thrusts into the Ireton end, but the defense kept the shots to a longer range and keeper Brenna Heaney cleaned up the box.
“We controlled the field the way we hoped to control it when we started. Our goal was off a set play that worked almost the way we draw it up.” explained Coach Gino Leon.
