Washington Post selects Olivia Babiec All-Met Rower, Zeigler honorable mention in girls lax

Bishop Ireton graduated senior Olivia Babiec is Bishop Ireton”s second athlete selected by the Washington Post as an all-Met performer for the 2010-11 academic year.  The Drexel-bound rower for head coach Eric Gehrke was the one of the keys to the most successful season in team history where the girl’s varsity 8+.

These girls finished the regular season undefeated, earned Silver in their league (WMIRA) Championship, and advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Stotesbury Cup in the top event for the first time in school history. In the process their strongest athlete, Babiec, saw all her individual hard work pay off with this prestigious award.

Coach Gehrke, in his first season at the helm of the Cardinal program, was proud of her accomplishments this spring.  “Oliva is a very dedicated rower, an extremely hard worker, which made her exceptionally strong.  She will continue to excel in college, we are all thrilled that she was recognized by the Post. It reflects well on the entire program.”

She is the daughter of Dr & Mrs Dan Babiec of Alexandria. A strong rowing family, her brother, Thaddeus, competed for the Cardinals’ crew and now rows for the Terriers of Boston University.  Her younger sister, Catherine, returns to the program next season as a junior to row for Bishop Ireton.

Madeline Zeigler, Ireton’s leading scorer during the 2011 girls lacrosse campaign, was named to the prestigious All-Met honorable mention list as a junior.   She, along with 2011 graduate Sarah Rupp, were selected earlier to the Virginia Independent Schools all state squad, as well as the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s first team all state.  “Maddie” is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Richard Zeigler of Alexandria.
