Cardinals dug a 7 run hole they could not climb out in a 7-5 setback to VISAA's 5th ranked Saints at St Stephens.
The Cardinals lost a tough game against cross town rivals St. Stephens and St. Agnes 7-5 on Thursday afternoon. After falling behind 7-0, a furious sixth inning comeback fell just short as Ireton dropped to 8-4 on the year.
St Stephens scored 6 of their 7 runs in the 4th inning on just 3 hits as they took advantage of 4 Ireton fielding errors. Junior pitcher Micki Crouch struck out 10 batters and allowed just 4 hits.
Ireton rallied in the 6th with back to back singles by Crouch and Heather Pearson. A walk to Meghan Pearson loaded the bases for Katie Kiesner, whose fly ball to center field was dropped, scoring two runs. Emily Quinn and Megan Sullivan continued the rally with consecutive singles making the score 7-5. The Cardinals pressed again in the 7th with a triple by Crouch and a line shot off the bat of Heather Pearson which somehow found the right fielder’s glove.
“We faced a tough pitcher today and suffered through one bad inning,” said coach Terri Pearson. “Am pleased the girls battled back after getting down.”
The Cardinals have a double header on Monday against Mount Vernon and Edison High schools.
