The WCAC continues to produce the most balanced, competitive baseball conferences in the area. The Cardinals are finding that out as they move through the 2011 campaign.
First the Cadets of St Johns visited Frank Mann Field. A preseason favorite for the conference title, the experienced Washingtonians looked every bit as good as advertised as they dismantled the Cardinals 19-5 in a 6 inning tilt shortened by the 10-run rule.
The Cadets scored in every inning, 3, then 2, then a 5, 3 more in the fourth, a run in the fifth and the knockout was five more in the top of the sixth. The Cardinals never quit, however, and as the score it 15-0, Ireton staged its own rally and hung a 5 on the scoreboard in the home half of the sixth. St Johns, however, continued hitting and “turned out the lights” with their sixth inning production.
Rain complicated the redbirds next contests on Friday and Saturday. Sidwell Friends was washed out on Friday and details remain on whether that non conference match up will be rescheduled. The Mustangs of Bishop McNamara were headed to Alexandria until the precipatation pushed the game to Sunday and changed the venue to PG County’s Boys and Girls Club fields.
The two clubs battled for 10 innings before the Mustangs found the winning run for a thrilling 2-1 WCAC win for the Forestville team.
Ireton looks to Monday and the Knights of St Mary’s Ryken headed to Frank Mann Field. First pitch is set for 5:30pm.
