Cardinal bats were alive in Ireton's 17-0 whitewash of St Johns Tuesday
Ireton pitcher Micki Crouch threw a no hitter Tuesday at Luckett field as the Cardinals dominated St. Johns 17-0 in a mercy rule shortened 5 inning game. The bats came alive, pounding out a season high 16 hits as they improved their record to 4-2.
Crouch struck out 11 of the first 12 batters she faced ending the day with 13 total strikeouts. The only blemish to her perfect game was a walk to the second to last batter of the contest. Only two balls were put in play, a weak come-back to the pitcher and a ground ball to second baseman Megan Sullivan.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning and added three more in the third before exploding for a 6 run 4th inning. Debbie Ward scored four times on three hits while Susie Rhodes went 2 for 4, driving in 4 runs. Emily Quinn contributed a hard hit single while driving in another run. Sophomore Sarah Howell had a pair of hits including a hard shot to the gap in right center field for a bases clearing double which ended the game.
“Micki got off to a great start today and never looked back,” said Coach Pearson. “She seemed to get stronger and stronger as the game progressed.”
The Cardinals return to action Friday afternoon at Luckett field against Norfolk Academy and then play a double header on Saturday.
