Cardinals’ third straight win propels hockey to tie for second, 9-1

The Bishop Ireton Varsity Hockey team travelled to the Ashburn Ice House last Friday night to face division foe Loudoun Valley/Heritage.  The Cardinal offensive attack quickly silenced the boisterous LVH crowd, scoring 3 times in the opening frame en route to a convincing 9-1 win.  Despite missing several starters in this holiday weekend tilt, the Ireton pressure was relentless, pumping 48 shots on goal.

Leading scorer Reid Yager led the way with his 2nd hat trick of the season, notching 3 goals and adding 1 assist.  Tom Cyrnak chipped in a pair of goals, and Joe Lavelle picked up his first tally of the season.  James Smith, Dillon Roach and Nick Tangora rounded out the goal scorers with one each.  Nick Tangora capped a 3 point night with a pair of assists, while William Chastain, David Souliotis, Tom Cyrnak, Dillon Roach and Jacob Bisnett each picked up single assists.

The Cardinal defense smothered the LVH squad from the start, never allowing them to mount any sustained pressure.  Robert Chastain was again solid in net, stopping 15 of 16 shots to pick up his 3rd league win of the season.  The win brought the Cardinals league record to 3-3, good for a 2nd place tie in the NVSHL’s Smythe Division.

The squad has one game on the schedule this week, a non-league affair against St. Albans on Tuesday afternoon at 4:45 pm at the Fort Dupont Ice Arena.  Their league game schedule will resume next Friday night, January 28th, with a matchup against undefeated Briar Woods at the Ashburn Ice House.
