Ireton advanced to 13-1 on the season in dual meet competition

Ireton’s grappler’ schedule was busy with five matches against WCAC foes Gonzaga and Bishop McNamara and against Episcopal, T.C. Williams and St.Stephens St. Agnes (SSSA) on Friday at the Alexandria City Duals.   Against all five teams the Cardinal grapplers were victorious, bringing the team dual record to 13 – 1 and bringing home another championship title, this time the Alexandria City Duals.

In a WCAC triangular, the Cards defeathered the Gonzaga Eagles
in a meet against them on Wednesday night with a final score of
58-18.  The match began at 103 lbs with Senior Elliot Mondragon who
pinned his opponent in 1:34.

Elliot’s pin was followed by pins from Darcy Gomez at 112 lbs in :58, Nick Womach at 130 lbs in 1:17, Andrew Baehre at 135 lbs in 3:14, Ricky Baier at 140 lbs in 5:27, and Gibson Hawk at 160 lbs in :38, which was also the fastest pin of the the evening.

Additional individual wins were achieved by Michael Rodriguez at 145 lbs with 7-3 decision, Ben Nagao at 152 lbs with a 12-0 major decision, Andrew Bladen at 171 lbs with a 7-2 decision and two wins by forfeit for Andrew Lutterloh at 215 lbs and Jimmy Keegan at heavy weight.

In the second dual of the evening, the Cardinals tamed the Bishop
McNamara Mustangs with a final score of 60-21. Against Bishop McNamara, the Ireton Grapplers won ten individual bouts, six of which were by pins from Elliot Mondragon at 103 lbs in 1:15, Arslan Ryspekov at 119 lbs in 3:21, Nick Womach at 130 lbs in 5:07, Andrew Baehre at 135 lbs in 4:32, Ricky Baier at 140 lbs in 1:41, and Michael Rodriguez at 145 lbs in
2:47. Fastest pin of the match was achieved in 1:15 by Elliot Mondragon,
who remains undefeated this season.

Improving upon the three-way tie for first place in last year’s
Alexandria City Duals, this year the Bishop Ireton Grapplers soundly
defeated TC Williams, Episcopal, and St. Stephens St. Agnes to claim the
2011 championship title. Leading the charge in this quad were seniors
Elliot Mondragon, Ricky Baier, and junior Andrew Lutterloh, who
won all of their individual matches during the evening.

Ireton’s first match was against the Titans from TC Williams, who the Cards
defeated by the largest margin of the evening with a final score of
49-26. Against the Titans the Cardinals won nine individual matches,
with four by pin from Arslan Ryspekov at 119 lbs in 1:00, Ricky Baier at
140 lbs in 2:55, Michael Rodriguez at 145 lbs in :43, and Andrew Bladen
at 171 lbs in :30, which was also the fastest pin of the match and the
evening for Ireton.

Additional wins were accomplished by Darcy Gomez at
112 lbs with a 7-5 decision, Ben Nagao at 152 lbs with a 8-0 major
decision, a win by injury default from Andrew Lutterloh at 215 lbs and
two wins by forfeit from Elliot Mondragon and Jeff Severini at 103 and
125 lbs respectively.

Our second match of the evening was against the #2 ranked Episcopal
Maroons. The Ireton Cardinals retained their #1 ranking by soundly
defeating the Maroons with a score of 39-27.  Eight of our grapplers
walked away victoriously from their individual bouts with wins, four of
which were by pin from Elliot Mondragon at 103 lbs in :46, Darcy Gomez
at 112 in :45, Andrew Baehre at 135 in 2:23, and Gibson Hawk at 160 lbs
in 3:21. The fastest pin of the match was delivered by Darcy Gomez
in :45. Additional wins were achieved by Arslan Ryspekov at 119 lbs with
a 5-3 decision, Nick Womach at 130 lbs with a 5-4 decision, Ricky Baier
at 140 lbs with a 6-0 decision and a win by forfeit from Andrew
Lutterloh at 215 lbs.

Our final meet of the day was against the St. Stephens St. Agnes Saints
and as the championship match, it was also the most exciting.  In this
match we took down the Saints with a final score of 46-27. Setting
the pace for this victory were pins from Elliot Mondragon in 3:31 at 103
lbs, a critical one from Jeff Severini in 1:42 at 125 lbs, Nick Womach in 2:58 at 130 lbs, Ricky Baier in 5:30 at 140 lbs, Michael Rodriguez in 3:22 at 145 lbs, and Andrew Bladen in :36, which was also the fastest pin of the match.

Addedl wins were achieved by Andrew Baehre with a 9-0 major decision at 135 lbs, and Andrew Lutterloh at 215 lbs with a win by injury
default.  Coach Don Dight was pleased with the wins.  “These were big wins for us tonight, guys wrestled well and are feeling confident about how they are wrestling.”

Ireton will need that confidence as their  next match will be against the Falcons from Our Lady of Good Counsel. This match will take place at Godley gym on Monday (1/17) at 10:00am.  The Cards will have a break in the wrestling schedule until next Saturday (1/22) when they travel to Benedictine High School in Richmond (304 N. Sheppard St, Richmond, VA 23221), where they compete in the Annual Virginia Catholic Schools Championship Tournament.

Defending their championship title from last year will be more difficult than earning it was, as the field of competition at this years tournament has almost doubled.  Competing at the tournament this year will host
Benedictine, John Paul the Great, Bishop O’Connell, Pope Paul VI,
Roanoke Catholic, Peninsula Catholic, Bishop Sullivan, and Bishop
Ireton.
