Any given night at Bishop Ireton, Patrick Hanafin has a good chance to carry the Cardinals by scoring points by the dozens. Wednesday night was no exception, as the senior forward piled in 17 points en route to a 70-50 triumph over the visiting Don Bosco Cristo Rey Wolfpack.  The Cardinal girls squad opened the evening with a lopsided 66-15 win over the Wolfpack girls.

Hanafin’s first points were scored on a 3-pointer, part of a 10-0 Ireton run to open the game. Although the Cardinals were briefly challenged at times, the home standing team never trailed. Ireton led 19-10 after a quarter and 37-22 at the half, thanks to Hanafin’s 13 points in the first half.

The Cardinals were able to maintain the lead by staying out of foul trouble- committing only two first-half fouls to the Wolfpack’s nine violations. Ireton’s lead hovered at 20 points through most of the second half, with all 13 men getting playing time by the final horn.

In the scoring column, Hanafin was joined by junior Marcus Hayes with 13 and senior Antonio Rouse, also with 13 points. With the win, Ireton improves to 5-3 on the young campaign.

The Cardinals are in action again on Monday in Sanford, NC at the Chatlee Shootout tournament, facing Hoke at 6pm. They will either face the winner or loser of the Lee – Leesville Road contest at 8pm the following day depending upon the outcome of the Hoke contest.  They then head to Bishop McNamara on Tuesday, Jan 4th and  return home Friday, January 7, to face St. John’s in a key WCAC battle. Tipoff is at 7:30.

Ireton’s girls are off for the Christmas holiday, they too return to action when they host the Mustangs of Bishop McNamara on Tuesday, Jan 4 in a JV/varsity doubleheader. Game times are 5 and 7pm.
