Cardinal wrestlers are all smiles after winning their tournament Dec 18th
Led by championships from seniors Elliot Mondragon, Ricky Baier, and junior Andrew Lutterloh, the Cardinals won their own Ireton Invitational for the second time inthree years, with snow cancelling the 2009 edition.
Darcy Gomez grabbed a third for the Cardinals at 112 pinning Jarad Rubens of Bullis in 29 seconds, while Corey Phillips earned a 4th place, falling 6-4 to D’Andre Wallace of DeMatha in the consolation final. Ireton sophomore Nick Womack fell 6-5 in a hard fought championship match to earn a second place finish as did Andrew Baehre, who upset top seeded Nick McClain from MSD to reach the finals, and was pinned in 3:13 by Sam Toomey of Benedictine.
Senior Ricky Baier, a top seed, defeated Dan Carlton of PVI to win the 140 pound title and Michael Rodriguez upset third seeded Ralph Toomey of Benedictine to win the consolation final, 11-5 and third place. Junior Ben Nagao grabbed a 4th place finish after losing by a fall to Greg McConville of MSD. Likewise, Gibson Hawk dropped a 6-0 decision enroute to a 4th place finish for Ireton at 160.
Andrew Lutterloh recorded three falls to waltz to the championship, earning the Mark Mangrum Award for the fastest pins in the tournament. Lutterloh’s wins came in 1:19, 1:06, and :46 in the final. Ryan Garey of Bullis won the Bill Richter most valuable wrestler trophy.
Benedictine finished second, Bullis School was third, and Paul VI Catholic was fourth.
