Bishop Ireton tangled with one of the area’s premier swim programs in the DeMatha Stags this week, falling 124-46 in dual meet action, while the girls blitzed Elizabeth Seton 109-61 at the St Albans pool on November 18th.

While DeMatha dominated the boys event, Ireton’s Kevin Grant was the lone winner for the Cardinals in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:07.07.   The strong competition did have its upside however, as Ireton’s 200 medley relay recorded a Catholic National and Metro qualifying time of 1:47.90, with  Michael Clark, Brian McGinty, Kevin Grant, and Tommy Corridon achieving that milestone in the season opener. Likewise, Clark qualified for the 50 free and 100 freestyle, Grant’s breaststroke time set him up for the two prestigous meets.  Brian McGinty likewise qualified for both events with his times in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

The girls meet was a successful one for the veteran squad. Three relays recorded Metro and Catholic National-qualifying times, including the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle.  Maddie Zeigler, Liz Collins, Saskia Kroesen, and Allison Wulff qualified in the medley, Kelly Palmer and Laura Becht joined Kroesen and Ziegler to qualify in both freestyle relays.  Palmer won a pair of individual races for Ireton both the 100 and 200 yard freestyle, while Kroesen took the 50 and 500 freestyle events.

Individually Liz Collins qualified for the Metro and Catholic Nationals in the 1o0 yard butterfly and breaststroke, Kroesen in the 50/500 free, Palmer in the 200 free, Wulff in the 200 IM, and Zeigler in both the 100 yard butterfly and back stroke.

The dive competition was held separately due to restrictions in a number of pools.  The Cardinals Nick Attiliis finished 4th while Alex Branham and Sarah Fyffe finished first and second in the girls diving event.

The Cardinals return to action on December 3rd at Georgetown Prep where they will tangle with diocesan rivals, Paul VI and Bishop O’Connell, in what is sure to be an exciting and action packed evening of swimming.
