The Bishop Ireton Varsity Ice Hockey team opened the season last Friday night at Kettler Capitals Iceplex with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of a tough Broad Run squad. It was the first league game for the Cardinals, who return to the Varsity level after playing JV for the last several seasons.
The Spartans opened the scoring, netting the first goal less than a minute into the contest, and never looked back. Down 3-0, the Cardinals scored their first goal of the evening in the second period on a slap shot from Tom Cyrnak, off of a nice assist by Nick Tangora. Soon after, though, Broad Run restored the 3-goal margin which proved to be too much for the struggling Cardinals offense. Reid Yager scored unassisted late in the third period to provide the final margin. Robert Chastain was stellar in net, stopping 43 of 47 shots from the high-powered Spartan offense.
The Cardinals season continues on Friday, December 3rd, at 3:45 pm at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Ballston, against Bishop O’Connell.
