Bishop Ireton Varsity Crew competed at the Head of the Occoquan on Sunday, November 7, 2010. The Cardinals sent two boats into competition on the Occoquan, including one boat in the Women’s Youth Eight race at 10: 30 am, and another in the Men’s Youth Eight race at 1:15 pm. The competitive field at the Head of the Occoquan included top ranked rowers from all over the East Coast including a few from our league. This regatta continues to bring spectacular teams to this competition.
“Racing today was exactly what we needed,” Head Coach Eric Gehrke was cited as saying, “There was a large field and we were in the mix of it. Now we must move forward and aim to have our best rows also translate to competitive times.” Lineups have been tweaked as the team has moved through the fall, and practiced very hard.
The Women’s Youth Eight that finished 15th in a field of twenty-five consisted of: Julie Roth (coxswain), Meredith Ramey, Alison Lee , Michelle Bouquet, Catherine Burgin, Carolyn Riegel, Brianna Burke, Emilia Paynor, and Reagan Miller.
The Men’s eight race that finished 14th in a field of twenty-three consisted of: Kevin Shoop (coxswain), Justin Roczniak, Stephen Barlow, Neil Heitbrink, Jimmy Fonda, Carter Constantino, Jake Hayhurst, Billy Colbert, and Nicolas Warner.
Both boats finished in very respectable times ahead of last year’s performance. Coaches were very proud of the effort
and look forward to the upcoming spring regatta season with a continued sense of purpose.
