Bishop Ireton girls varsity tennis team completed their best season under Coach Katie Sloper qualifying for the 2010 VISAA State girls tennis championship tournament. The eight top teams in the State participated in a single elimination championship tournament on Tuesday, November 9, 2010. The Cardinal ladies  seeded at #8 played #1 seed St. Catherine’s in Richmond, Va.

Playing ten (10) game pro sets the Cardinal ladies played great tennis but fell short (0-9) to this state powerhouse.   Singles scores finished as follows:  Monica Zakaria (2-10) at #1, Mary Rose White (3-10) at #2, Christy Macey (1-10) at #3, Nicole Williams (1-10) at #4, Megan Fyffe (1-10) at #5 and Allie Laclede (3-10) at #6.

Doubles followed with scores: Monica Zakaria/ Nicole Williams (3-10) at #1, Mary Rose White/ Christy Macey (1-10) at #2 and Allie Laclede/ Megan Sullivan (5-10) at #3 doubles.

WCAC rivals Bishop O’Connell and Paul VI Catholic were also eliminated in this first round.

St. Catherines with a record of 16-1 will advance to the semifinals while the Ireton team at 10-8 (10-5 in conference play) returned home to celebrate the new level of tennis they worked to achieve for the Cardinal 2010 record books and offer farewells to their senior starters Allie Laclede and captain Nicole Williams for four years of great tennis.
