Thaddeus Babiec signs with Boston University

Senior Thaddeus Babiec will attend Boston University with a scholarship to row for Coach Tom Bohrer in the fall. He will enroll in the School’s College of Engineering.

Babiec has had a distinguished career beginning with rowing on the novice 8+ boat that won the Virginia state championship. In the current year he has captained the team that won the varsity 8+ championship at the Baltimore City championships, won the Cindy Cole Cup, defeated DeMatha in the Anacostia Regatta, and captured the Bishop’s Cup in head-to-head competition with Bishop O’Connell.

Babiec started the season with a medal in all four events he rowed in the Mid-Atlantic ERG Sprints at TC Williams High School against the area’s top programs. It was an exceptional performance as he captured a gold in the 2K, a silver medal in the 500 meter sprint, silver in the 3minute double slide, and a bronze in the 20 minute piece. He finished his career winning the Alexandria Sportsman’s Club’s male rower of the year, an award he will receive on May 18th during the Club’s annual awards banquet in Alexandria.  He is the first Ireton rower ever to receive that award.

“Thaddeus, as much as any single rower in the program, has turned us into a competitive team from just a club,” praised head coach Ryan Gibson.  “We now have division I colleges coming to the boathouse to visit us at practice, teams like Loyola, the Naval Academy, because of the progress that we have made during Thaddeus’ and his classmates four years on the water.  We are thrilled that he will be rowing at Boston University.”

He is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Dan Babiec of Alexandria, Virginia.  He is an honors student at Bishop Ireton. Thaddeus played varsity basketball for the Cardinals in addition to rowing for the Catholic school.
