Cardinals “takedown” Gonzaga, Good Counsel in dual meets

Proving that the cardinal is a mightier bird than either the eagle or the falcon this wrestling season, the Cardinal grapplers defeated both the Gonzaga Eagles and the Good Counsel Falcons in the last of their regular season dual matches on Tuesday and Thursday of last week.

In the meet against Gonzaga, Ireton plucked the Eagles by a score of 43-27.  It was true – poultry in motion – as nine of our Cardinals won their individual matches.  Four of which were by pins from Elliot Mondragon (2:07), Ricky Baier (4:37), Ryan Delaney (3:13), and the fastest pin of the night was delivered by senior and team captain Kevin Galloway in 46 seconds!  Additional wins were achieved by Andrew Georgeiff (Default/Forfeit), Andrew Baehre (5-3), Joe Vitale (12-2), Scott Martin (12-5), and Andrew Lutterloh (4-3).

In the  Seniors Night  meet at FR. Godley Gym against Our Lady of Good Counsel, Ireton dispelled the myth that the Falcons are a more – talon-ted – team than the Cardinals by riding a pair of Falcon forfeits at 103 and heavyweight enroute to defeating them with a score of 45-28.  Against Good Counsel, eight Cardinal grapplers – defended the nest – by winning their individual matches.  Five of those wins were by pins from Darcy Gomez (:32), Ricky Baier (3:36), Joe Vitale (4:57), Ryan Delaney (1:06), and Andrew Lutterloh (3:39).  Additional wins were logged by Andrew Georgeiff (5-2), and forfeits by Elliot Mondragon and Jacob Manley.  Fastest pin of this match was accomplished by Darcy Gomez.  The win against Good Counsel was especially satisfying for the squad as it represented their appreciation and recognition for the efforts of the seniors.  Coach Don Dight recognized the following seniors and parents during ceremonies prior to the match::

125: Andrew Georgeiff
145: Joe Vitale (Captain)
152: Ryan Delaney
152: Andre Reveille
160: Scott Martin
171: Kevin Galloway (Captain)
189: Paul Schulte
189: Brandon Razkallah
285: Jacob Manley (Captain)

The Cardinals next wrestling event will be the St. Albans Tournament beginning on Friday, February 12, 2010.  This is a two-day tournament that will feature about 30 or more schools from throughout the DC area and a couple from New Jersey/Pennsylvania. It is a very prestigious tournament and will represent a challenging event for the wrestlers.  Wrestling will begin at 10:00AM at St. Albans School (3001 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016).

The WCAC (Washington Catholic Athletic Conference) Tournament has been rescheduled due to the snow storm to Monday, February 15 (President’s Day).  The tournament will be held at the same location as previously scheduled (i.e., Bishop McNamara High School, 6800 Marlboro Pike, Forestville, MD 20747).

The last wrestling event of the season for most of the Cardinals will be the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Championship Tournament.  This year the tournament will be hosted and held at St. Christopher’s High School in Richmond (711 St. Christopher’s Road, Richmond, VA 23226).
