MacDonald inks with Air Force Academy

Swim and dive team captain, senior Angus MacDonald, will receive an appointment to attend the United States Air Force Academy next fall to swim for the Division I Falcon swim program, according to athletic officials at Air Force and Bishop Ireton.

MacDonald, the son of Angus and Gail MacDonald of Woodbridge, Virginia, has set Ireton individual swim records in the freestyle and backstroke as well as swimming on a record-setting 200 meter freestyle relay team during the 2009-2010 campaign.  He won a gold and bronze medal at the recent Catholic National Championships in Philadelphia last month.  The Ireton speedster expects to swim the 50 meter freestyle and 100meter backstroke for Air Force next season and suggests a business major may be in his plans for Colorado Springs.

“It is a great opportunity for me, not only in athletics, but academically” said the lanky swimmer at a signing ceremony at the Alexandria school recently. “I look forward to the opportunities to lead after graduation.” The 3.5 GPA sported by MacDonald and his considerable involvement in community service earned him high praise from Ireton’s athletic director, Bill Simmons.

“You hear the expression, ‘if you want something done, get a busy person to do it.’ Well, Angus has not only been busy in the pool and classroom, he has been mentoring other boy scouts and earning the Eagle Scout badge himself. When swimmers wanted to get a water polo program started at Bishop Ireton, it was Angus that picked up the mantle and got it done, he literally organized everything, attended meetings, and established our School as a charter member of a water polo league now operating in the greater DC area. I can’t say enough about him or how proud we are of him in the pool and in the community. The Air Force is getting a fine young man.”

For now the Cardinals hope he continues his success in the pool with Virginia state championships, the Washington DC private school championships, and Metros all on the horizon for the talented swim and dive squad.  And, of course, the senior night clash with rival Bishop O’Connell upcoming Wednesday, Feb 10 at Holton-Arms School.
