Cards go 1-2 in WCAC dual meets

The Cardinals stepped up to the WCAC’s best programs this winter and experienced a small dose of reality falling to DeMatha 49-18 and PVI 49-15, the Virginia Independent School’s number 2 ranked team January 26th in Fairfax.   Bishop Ireton rebounded on Wednesday with a 60-12 thrashing of St Mary Ryken in Leonardtown. The team dual record now stands at 22-8.

In the first match of the week against DeMatha, only four of Cardinals won their individual matches. Elliot Mondragon achieved the only pin of the match in :43. Both Ryan Delaney (12-0) and Andrew Lutterloh (16-1) won their matches with a major decision at 152lbs and 189lbs respectively and team captain Joe Vitale defeated his opponent with a score of 6-1.

Against PVI, Ireton managed but three victories their individual matches. Two of the three wins were by pin from team captain and senior Jacob Manley (:48) and the fastest pin from Elliot Mondragon (:43). The only other win against PVI was achieved by Ricky Baier with a score of 12-6.

In the Wednesday dual at Ryken, the outcome was quite different and worth the two-hour rush hour drive to St. Mary’s County in southern Maryland for the Cardinal faithful, as the Cardinals soundly defeated St. Mary Ryken. On this day, the Alexandria school won all but three matches. Eight of those victories were by pin from Andrew Georgeiff (4:19), Cory Phillips (3:47), Nick Womach (:18), Joe Vitale (2:35), Ryan Delaney (:33), Kevin Galloway (:09), Andrew Lutterloh (2:58), and Jacob Manley (:56). Additional wins were achieved by Elliot Mondragon, who teched his opponent with a score of 17-0, Darcy Gomez with a score of 8-7, and Ricky Baier, who received a major decision against his opponent with a score of 9-1. Team captain and senior Kevin Galloway achieved the fastest pin in an astounding :09, which represents his career fastest pin!

Ireton returns to action this week when they travel to Gonzaga (19 Eye St. NW., Washington, DC 20001) on Tuesday (2/2/2010) and return home to Father Godley Gym on Wednesday (2/3/2010) for senior night against Good Counsel. On Saturday, February 6, 2010, Bishop McNamara School will host the 2009-10 WCAC Tournament. The event will be held at their Fine Arts & Athletics Center (6800 Marlboro Pike, District Heights, MD 20747). The tournament is scheduled to begin at 9:00am with the championship bouts scheduled to begin at 5pm.  Admission to the WCAC tournament is $5 for an all-day pass.
