Bishop Ireton pulls away from The Potomac School

Bishop Ireton used a 6-1 run midway through the second half of a key Virginia Independent Schools match-up with the The Potomac School of the ISL to pull away for a 12-8 win in McLean Tuesday.

After a tight first half with five lead changes, the Lions turned an Ireton 5-4 halftime advantage into a 7-6 lead.

Just when it looked like momentum had left the Alexandria school, seniors Claire Banta, Heather Olson, and sophomore Sarah Rupp began to sweep the midfield allowing the Cardinals to dominate the offensive zone.

Junior Janet Tela tallied three goals and a pair of assists for Ireton, Rupp added a pair of goals as did Ashton Hellmuth.

Both schools are highly ranked in the state’s girls lacrosse polls, both expected to appear in the state playoffs to be hosted in Alexandria in May. Ireton returns to action Friday when they host cross-town rival TC Williams on Fannon Field. Game time is 5:30pm.
