Boys’ Lax begins a new tradition with jersey award

Former coach Joey Kestermann presents the JV jersey #15 to Liam McHugh as current head coach, Brendan Rose looks on.

This past Monday night at Bishop Ireton, the men’s lacrosse team had a special presentation. The team gathered together for the kickoff of the season with a pasta dinner where coaches also presented this year’s team with their jerseys.

The surprise was that the first jerseys handed out this season hold a special meaning to Bishop Ireton and especially to the men’s lacrosse program. The #15 jersey is a symbol in the program because it was worn by a special young alumni that would do anything for our “Team”. The emphasis on “Team” is significant because our honoree not only touched the lives of people directly associated with the lacrosse program, but the many friends, families and school community that is Bishop Ireton.

In April 2010 the men’s lacrosse family lost a cornerstone member of its alumni unexpectedly when Chris Delaware, class of 1998,  died.  He was an outstanding young man who would put anyone’s needs above his own to ensure their success. He not only excelled on the field as a player but also selflessly returned to Bishop Ireton to man the sidelines as a coach so he could share his passion, knowledge and attitude to shape future young gentleman. So to honor this great alumnus’s contributions and his life, the program will annually present a player at each level with the #15 jersey to carry on his memory.

Former varsity head coach Joey Kestermann, a close friend, teammate, and no stranger to the program made the presentation after  honoring the memory of Chris Delaware before presenting the first jersey of the year.

Jersey celebration 2-2015

This year’s honorees are both well deserving leaders on and off the field. At the Varsity level the recipient was Ryan Verducci and the JV recipient was Liam McHugh.

Swim & Dive Team makes holidays brighter

Cardinal swimmers/divers made Christmas brighter for 10 families at Bucknell Elementary School in the Farifax County part of Alexandria.

Cardinal swimmers/divers made Christmas brighter for 10 families at Bucknell Elementary School in the Farifax County part of Alexandria.

The BI Water Cardinals dug deep and helped to deliver Christmas to ten Bucknell Elementary School families for their Holiday Service Project.

Bucknell School representative Mrs. St. John-Cunning was very appreciative of all of the donated gifts as well as the generous time donation to gather, assemble, and wrap everything. Gift wrappers included Clara Boggs, Jimmy Grant, Hayden Britt, Rose Meyers, and Annie Sullivan.

A special thanks goes out to Carla Pena’s mom, Vanessa, who with the help of her son, came and wrapped presents for three families. And Carla isn’t even swimming this year! The gifts were delivered on December 18, 2014 by team moms Phyllis Boggs and Joy Kelly.

As observed by team dad Rob McGuckin, “I am sure I speak for everyone when I say “great job” with this initiative. What you all have done here is a true game-changer for these families. I was moved when I read the initial email, and continued to be through viewing the picture below. Thank you for representing the school and your families with this selfless act.”

Boys’ hoops closes the book on 2013-14 with awards banquet

Renowned college coach Pete Strickland was the keynote speaker at the Bishop Ireton Boys' Basketball banquet on Apr 6th at Bishop Ireton.

Bishop Ireton’s boys’ basketball team honored its varsity team Sunday night during their annual awards banquet.  Guest speaker and long time college coach, Pete Strickland, praised the squad for their season and their class.

“I saw you beat a very good Washington and Lee team early in the season.  You beat them handily and, if you followed their season, they had a very good year.  But you played with a great chemistry and with class, when you got out ahead, you played disciplined basketball, didn’t show anyone up.” lauded the veteran coach. “And, I saw you play your hearts out in a narrow loss at DeMatha.  I’m a DeMatha guy, but I was rooting for your great effort to be rewarded.  And, you know, I was there in the WCAC semifinals, when you played DeMatha again but it wasn’t so close.  You played with the same determination at the end of the game, played hard in the fourth quarter like you did in the first quarter.  You showed people a lot by the way you played.”

Following Strickland’s remarks, head coach Neil Berkman thanked a number of supporters, assistant coaches, and support staff before turning his attention to his team one last time.  “We are doing more than preparing to play basketball.” said Berkman, as he commended the youngest players who filled their roles, none in the spotlight, but all important to the success of the entire team. He went on to praise the defensive prowness of sophomore Jeremiah Brooks and the impact of his loss in the O’Connell win on the Cardinals defeat in the WCAC semifinal. But he saved his most effusive praise for his four seniors.

The New York native commended the hard work and constant improvement of Ty Quarles and Army-bound Jamie Senft.  “Big guys do a lot of growing and their development can be later than other guys, Jamie sure did a lot of growing and maturing as a post player this year.”  Likewise Berkman named senior Patrick Moseh as the squad’s most valuable player, a player that stuck with it for three varsity years continually working and improving, in fact, the 5th year coach suggested Moseh could be one of the best offensive rebounders in the talent-rich WCAC.  Finally,  Dan Noe, heading for the US Naval Academy, was honored as the team’s Cardinal award winner.

“Tireless worker, put up 67,000 jump shots in the gym as a Cardinal, always looking to improve.  When Jamie went down, Dan played the post for us last year. When our point guard transferred, he stepped to play that position this year. ” Berkman pointed out.  “And, as evidence of the type of people we have in our program, Dan and Jamie will attend service academies and commit to defending our country when their college basketball days are completed. Likewise, said Berkman, “Pat Moseh will attend Wheeling Jesuit and no doubt excel. He is a division I talent, but is going where he will get a great education and his best days are still ahead of him, for all these seniors.”

Led by the Maryland alum, the senior class of Coach Berkman, earned 18 wins for the second consecutive season, 48 in their three varsity campaigns.  The Cardinals and WCAC champion Panthers of Paul VI were the only two programs to reach the WCAC semifinals in 2012-13 and 2013-14.  That unparallelled success earned Dan Noe first team, all WCAC honors, while Moseh was a second team selection.  DCSportsFan ranked the Cardinals 7th in the final poll and named Neil Berkman as their Coach of the Year.

Crew Christmas sales brighten Season preparations

Crew Christmas tree all decorated and ready for Santa!

The annual  Bishop Ireton Crew Christmas tree and wreath sales overcame challenging weather to again send patrons home for holiday preparations with fresh evergreen decorations.

Organizer Jim Gwiazda reported nearly a hundred wreaths were sold and nearly 40 trees during the 48 hours of sales Friday night through Sunday.

“The Friday night weather was miserable, but I wanted to get first crack at the selection,” reported athletic director, Bill Simmons. “Plus, my friends asked me to find them a good tree for their house and I wanted to make sure they were happy again this year. It was the 4th year in a row they have bought an Ireton tree!”

Easily Ireton’s most expensive program, the crew handles a number of fundraisers during the year, with volunteers coming from the rowers, their parents, and other supporters of the program.   After more than ten years of tree sales, it will take more than an evening of rain or cold weather to slow them down.  And, as the photo attests, the result is a sight to behold!
