National regattas cap Cardinal rowing season

615May 15, 16 saw the Bishop Ireton rowers hit the road for the first of two national level regattas held in Philadelphia area.  First, the team competed in the Stotesbury Regatta in Philadelphia (the world’s largest high school regatta) where the Men’s Varsity 4 finished in 15th place (out of 60 boats) overall. The Women’s Varsity 4 finished in 16th place overall in a field of 57 boats. The Cardinals’  women’s double as well as the women’s novice quad rowed hard, but did not advance to the semi-finals.

Bishop Ireton rowed in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, May 22, 23  at the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Regatta where both the men’s and women’s Varsity 4 boats competed hard. They both were behind in their opening heats in fifth place and then finished strong in the last five hundred meters to come in third.

This sent them to the repechage round instead of going straight to semi-finals. In their repechage heat for the women, they ended up in a very tight race pulling very hard at the end to finish first. The men’s boat also was in a tight race and ended second in a close finish. The two boats then advanced to semi-finals where they fell short and did not advance to finals. The women’s boat finished 18th overall and the men’s boat finished 17th overall. Bishop Ireton made a good, strong showing after a season filled with adversity.

We are very proud of our entire team and look forward to a strong group of men and women returning to BI Crew next year!623

Villanova-bound Drew Smith anchors Bishop Ireton’s 4×400 meter relay to a 5th place finish at WCAC championships on May 17th at Good Counsel.

After a rough winter season that never wanted to end, Bishop Ireton’s track and field team finally got on the track and has been racing ever since.  The team closed the spring season Saturday at the 2015 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s Track and Field Championships at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland.

The DeMatha Stags claimed the boys’ title, edging second place St Johns and for the 8th consecutive year, Elizabeth Seton raced away to a lopsided win on the girls’ side of the meet.

Thomas Ward recorded a top 1o finish for the Cardinal guys in the 3200 meter event. Ward covered the distance on a hot, sunny afternoon in a time of 10:40.65.  Joe Siedlarz earned a 6th place finish for Ireton in the discus with a toss of 104 feet, 9 inches.   The relay team of Sam Smith, Josh Ammon, Drew Smith and Perris Jones earned a 5th place in the 4×100 in a time of :45.65.

Cardinals repeat as Girls’ Lacrosse state champions, 12-10

It's all smiles for the Cardinals after stopping undefeated St Stephens 12-10 for the second year in a row to win the VISAA Division I lacrosse championship in Ashland, Virginia.

It’s all smiles for the Cardinals after stopping undefeated St Stephens 12-10 for the second year in a row to win the VISAA Division I lacrosse championship in Ashland, Virginia.

Bishop Ireton made it two in a row, topping previously undefeated and top-ranked St Stephens/St Agnes 12-10 Saturday to win the VISAA Division I state championship.

Ireton bolted to a 5-0 lead early, behind a pair of goals from Kelly Larkin and Charlotte Sofield, and one from Kayla Marshall,  then watched the advantage melt in the second half as the Saints rode a series of free position shots, including the first four by Ellie Carson to tie the game at 9-9 when Ellie Majure scored for St Stephens/St Agnes.

After a Cardinal time out, senior Kelly Larkin gave the Cardinals the lead and the Cardinals extended it to 11-9 moments later. Saints drew within one a Majure tally before the Ireton regained the two goal margin and won the final draw of the game and possessed the ball for the game’s final 4 minutes.

Kayla Duperrouzel was one of the unsung heroines of the game, winning key draws early setting up the fast start by Ireton, then winning key draws late to steal the momentum back from the top-ranked Saints.

Cardinals end the season 21-3 while the Saints taste defeat for the first time since they lost to Ireton last year in the state finals, and end 28-1.

Girls’ Varsity 4 boat claims WMIRA title

Rowers pose following a busy and successful day of racing on the Anacostia River at the 2015 WMIRA championships.

Rowers pose following a busy and successful day of racing on the Anacostia River at the 2015 WMIRA championships.

The 2015 WMIRA Championship was held Saturday May 9, 2015 on the Anacostia Rover. WMIRA has grown to be a large and premier organization with many of the leading rowing school racing under WMIRA. In recent years many Stotesbury Cup Regatta winners come out of WMIRA, noted the Cardinals’ Coach Jim Mitchell.

Bishop Ireton’s girls’ Senior Four won the WMIRA Championship for the very first win in a Senior/Varisty Event at WMIRA for program. The Rowers from Stroke of the boat to the Bow are Noelle Cheney, Isabel Shirron, Carla Pena and Elizabeth McCabe. The coxswain was a freshman Elyse Holmes. They won both their first heat and event final in very convincing form.

In a very tough race the boys’ Senior Four took a Bronze Medal racing against keen competition. With Veronica Richardson sidelined, Elyse Holmes had to cox both boats, literally jumping out of one boat and right into another. With the boys racing first in the finals, she had to land her boat and then immediately jump into the girls’ boat and get to the starting line, a 40-minute period normally, she hustled around in 8 minutes.

With the win, the girls have earned the right to represent this area in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America. This is an invitation only regatta and held over Memorial Day Weekend.

In a season marked by a new coaching staff, a prolonged winter, boat accidents, and a tough, unpredictable schedule, the rowers demonstrated a resilience in racing well in the season’s biggest meet to date, according to head coach Jim Mitchell.

Cardinals Upset in WCAC semifinals, 10-9

Sophomore Kayla Duperrouzel gets ready for the first draw versus Bishop O'Connell.

Sophomore Kayla Duperrouzel gets ready for the first draw versus Bishop O’Connell.

Bishop Ireton’s bid to defend its 2014 WCAC  girls lacrosse championship was derailed by third-seeded Holy Cross 10-9  Thursday.  With the win, it is the #8 Tartans (15-3) that will face Good Counsel on Monday at 5pm on Ludwig Field at the University of Maryland.

The Cardinals started the contest like a team on a mission, bolting to a 3-0, and 4-1 advantage. Holy Cross Coach Kirsten Coleman called a timeout with 14:19 to play and Bishop Ireton seemed poised to blow the game open. Instead, it was the Tartans that grabbed the initiative. When Delaney Muldoon scored on a free position shot the Tartan’s rallied to 4-3.  Kayla Duperrouzel responded for the Cardinals, but the momemtum had shifted sides as the first half wore down.

Holy Cross scored the final two goals of the first half in the period’s final 44 seconds and the visitors took at 6-5 advantage to intermission on a perfect day for lacrosse.  The Cardinals had played a strong second half  most of the season and the Ireton faithful hoped for more of the same.

Kelly Larkin scored the first goal of the second half, but the Tartans continued to attack, play an aggressive defense and Jackie Branthover stopped the Cardinals time and again when the defense wasn’t turning the Cardinals over.  Suddenly it was 9-7 for the black shirted Marylanders and the game seemed to slow to a crawl in the Cardinals offensive zone.  With 19:28 Ireton closed to 9-8, with 5 minutes to play it was 10-9.

The game was slipping away and nothing the home team did was enough or making a difference. Holy Cross spread the field and played the cat-and-mouse game that made the contest look like they were playing 15 field players. Cardinals chased, Tartans move the ball one step ahead as the seconds ticked off the clock to the final :00.

For the Cardinals (17-3), a bitter disappointment but the VISAA state playoff loom next week. Some consolation to have another prize, a state championship and possibly a match up with neighboring St Stephens/St Agnes to capture one of the season’s two big prizes.  Quarterfinals are Tuesday at Fannon Field, time and opponent to be determined. Admission to VISAA  playoffs is $5/person.

Cardinals top PVI, edged by Falcons in WCAC finale

Senior Kaitlin Luzik and six teammates will play their final home game Saturday at 4:30pm when they host Cape Henlopen Delaware, the 6-time defending state champions on Ireton's senior day.

Senior Kaitlin Luzik and six teammates will play their final home game Saturday at 4:30pm when they host Cape Henlopen Delaware, the 6-time defending state champions on Ireton’s senior day.

The Bishop Ireton girls’ lacrosse team beat WCAC opponent Paul VI by a convincing 17-3 margin on Tuesday, April 28, at Fannon Field; and suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Good Counsel Falcons last night 17-16 in Olney, Maryland. The Cardinals finish their WCAC regular-season schedule 7-1 and will have the #2 seed in the conference tournament starting next week. Your redbirds are 15-2 overall right now—with one regular-season game remaining. At this point last year the team was 13-4.

The Cardinals came out hard and fast against the visiting Paul VI Panthers, scored their first goal in 27 seconds, and simply never looked back after that first quick strike. Bishop Ireton held a comfortable 11-0 lead at halftime. Key to the win was a near total dominance of draw controls. Eight different players got goals or assists: Kelly Larkin notched 3 goals, 5 assists; Kelly Mathews had 4 goals; Charlotte Sofield got 3 goals, 1 assist;  Kayla Marshall had 2 goals, 2 assists; Kayla Duperrouzel had 2 goals, 1 assist; Christine Macey got 1 goal, 1 assist; and Grace Fletcher & Madison Mote each got 1 goal. Amelia Cole made 6 saves. Ireton also claimed 24 ground balls and scooped up 12 caused turnovers.

Bishop Ireton came out firing against Good Counsel and went up early 3-0, but it was a seesaw battle the whole game. The game was tied 8-8 at halftime. The Falcons scored the winning goal with 45 seconds left in the game. Ireton had a chance to tie it with mere seconds left but the shot didn’t make it in the goal—it was close! This was only the third time this season so far that the Cardinals have allowed 10 or more goals to be scored against them. This happened six times last year…and things worked out pretty good in the end for Ireton in 2014.

Seven different players for Bishop Ireton scored goals and/or made assists as follows: Mathews got 4 goals, 1 assist; Sofield had 3 goals, 1 assist; Larkin notched 3 goals, 3 assists; Duperrouzel got 2 goals, 2 assists; Kaitlin Luzik had 1 goal; Christine Macey notched 2 goals; and Marshall got 1 goal, 1 assist. Cole made 5 saves.

Ireton’s WCAC quarterfinal playoff game is set for Tuesday, May 5, 4:00 p.m., at Fannon Field versus Bishop O’Connell. This initial 2015 playoff game is just the first step for the Cardinals’ program towards its ultimate goal of another “Six Games in May.”

But wait, there’s more!

Don’t forget about SENIOR DAY and the Cardinals’ last regular-season game of the year this Saturday, May 2, 4:30 p.m., versus the tough Cape Henlopen Vikings at Fannon Field. The Vikings are the six-time defending Delaware state champions who took the Cardinals to double overtime on May 2, 2014. Ireton was able to win that hard-fought game 12-11 in Lewes, DE.
