Sophomore goalkeeper Amelia Cole stops Eagles on a free position opportunity in the Cardinals 14-4 setback Saturday.

The Cardinals went 1-1 over the weekend. The girls defeated Collegiate School of Richmond 19-7 at Fannon Field on Friday, April 10. They were beaten by perennial national #1 McDonogh School 14-4 in Owings Mills, MD, on Saturday, April 11, in a hard-fought contest.

Bishop Ireton dominated Collegiate from the start of the game to the final buzzer. The Cardinals led 7-3 at halftime and the girls tightened their grip on the final victory in the second half with a balanced scoring attack and a nearly impenetrable defense.  Senior Charlotte Sofield led the scoring attack with 5 goals and two assists. Junior Kelly Larkin had 3 goals, 2 assists; senior Kelly Mathews got 3 goals, 1 assist; sophomore Kayla Duperrouzel notched 3 goals; senior Christine Macey got 2 goals, 1 assist; sophomore Kayla Marshall had 2 goals; senior Kaitlin Luzik notched 1 goal; freshmen Lexi Ledoyen and Madison Mote got 2 assists and 1 assist respectively. Sophomore goalie Amelia Cole recorded 10 saves and got 1 assist.

Ireton also dominated fielding against Collegiate by getting 15 ground balls and notching 7 caused turnovers.

McDonogh has not lost since April 2009 and carried a 122-game winning streak going into Saturday’s game versus Bishop Ireton’s program-record, 18-game winning streak dating back to April 2014. The Cardinals fought hard from beginning to end against a great team who dominated draw controls throughout the game and which has 20 NCAA Division I recruits on its roster. Unfortunately Ireton could also not solve a hard defensive effort by the Eagles and were down 9-2 at halftime. The Cardinals were handicapped late in the second half after getting their fourth yellow card of the game and being forced at that point to play one player down for the last 10 minutes of the game.

Cole worked hard in the crease and got a career-high 13 saves despite facing a withering McDonogh attack which included no less than 7 free position shots.

Halfway through the regular season, the Cardinals are now 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the WCAC. Next up for Bishop Ireton is an away game against WCAC foe Elizabeth Seton in Bladensburg, MD, on Thursday, April 16, 4:00 p.m. Ireton flies to Georgia and plays two games on Saturday, April 18, during the prestigious Legacy Cup event outside of Atlanta versus powerhouse teams Mannheim Township (PA) and Milton (GA).

With a 13-7 margin on draw controls, McDonogh had frequent scoring opportunities, this one turned away in first half action.
